COMPANY BACKGROUND

EARLY YEARS

Nexus Electronics Ltd was founded by Julian Brown and Giles Hutchison in 1990, when they won a contract from Xaar Printing Technologies to design and manufacture individual Ink Jet printer development systems. This development system enabled Xaar to develop their Ink Jet head technology that took the company public in [1999]. Nexus developed over seventy electronic products during the 1990s, several of them for use in transporting, storing and displaying Honk-Kong stock exchange data for AFE Inc which was purchased by Reuters in [1996]. In 1998 Nexus were approached by FutureTV to design and build an Interactive Television/Video On Demand system. At the time the equipment needed to build a system was either not available or excruciatingly expensive; So Nexus designed and built Media Servers, Network switches and Set-top boxes for FutureTV. Using this technology FutureTV raised money to become a major player in the emerging DSL and Cable Video On Demand and Interactive TV market.

SALE TO FUTURETV

As much of the technology used in the FutureTV system had been designed by Nexus, the company was purchased by FutureTV and became the FutureTV research and development arm, based in Cambridge.

BUY BACK

Various trial iTV systems were deployed at Telcos such as Eircom and Telephonica, however towards the end of 2000 it was becoming clear that Future TV should focus on delivering software. An offer was made to FutureTV by the original founders to buy back the now dormant Nexus Electronics along with hardware and software intellectual property - the offer was accepted and the company started trading again in April 2001.

TODAY

We are now far more involved with ASIC and FPGA development, as this is where system development now takes place. See our ASIC and FPGA service page.
